Diamond Dogs Training and Rehabilitation was started on January 1st, 2010 to assist people and their canine companions with obedience, everyday behavioural problems, and the not-so-everyday behavioural problems you and your dog can encounter. Chelsey Thomas trains in Swift Current Saskatchewan and area.
I have 6 years of dog training/rehabilitating experience. I was in the shelter more than I was at home, or at school, helping out with the dogs anyway I could. Soon I was dealing with problem dogs, the ones who were fearful, aggressive, or shy. I quickly developed a reputation for dealing with these types of dogs. Then I decided to pursue a career with dogs, due largley in part to my own dog, Chev. I had seen behaviour problems develop in my dog and decided to take him to obedience classes. He excelled in them but the behaviour problems persisted, so I began looking for other options.
I found other options on my own and with my best friend, a vet tech. Together we developed ways to curb Chev's aggression to other dogs and people. We used a combination of wolf pack hierarchy and positive reinforcement. Everytime Chev did something desirable he got a reward, every time he did something that was unacceptable another dog or person, either he was ignored, distracted, corrected with a tap to the shoulder, or put on his side on the ground.
Chev slowly began to come around and inspired me. I thought that if I could do this with my dog, I can help other people with theirs. I began researching, reading books, observing and talking with other people in the dog world. I found that working with a dog's natural instincts, positive reinforcement, allowing them to be around other dogs, and allowing the dog to be a dog, was a method to help dogs and their people reconnect with Nature and instincts.
